“BALIK TANAW (Look Back)”
April 20, 2012

(Vancouver, BC, Canada) Through a captivating display of authentic folk dance and music, local Filipino performing arts group, Kababayang Pilipino will celebrate and share the rich and diverse culture of the Philippines on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the James Cowan Theatre at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby, BC.

In its 19th season offering, "Balik Tanaw" is a retrospective look at Kababayang Pilipino’s repertoire of folk dances. "Balik Tanaw", literally translated as a "look back" will give its audiences exactly that, which is a second glimpse at pieces presented only once or twice before; it will include hidden treasures such as "Pagdiwata" from the Tagbanua of Palawan and "Jota Nuevo", a fiery jota featuring a composition by Kababayang Pilipino’s Rondalla. It will also feature the company’s most loved dances, including "Tinikling" and "Singkil", which are perennial audience favourites and have become Kababayang Pilipino’s signature. Randy Romero, Artistic Director stated, "we are excited to present some unhidden gems that truly showcase the diversity of our Filipino folk dance heritage."

Since 1993, Kababayang Pilipino has been wowing its audiences with its dynamic and dramatic traditional Filipino dance interpretations complemented by its authentic and brilliant costuming and fiery live musical accompaniment. Under the direction of, Randy Romero, Kababayang Pilipino continues to push the boundaries, taking what is essentially folk and making it contemporary and relevant. From its desire to discovering new horizons, while committing to preserving the authenticity of its presentations, Kababayang Pilipino, while always looking back to its new roots, continues to propel itself forward as one of the premiere Philippine folk dance companies in Canada.

With an ensemble of over 40 members comprised mainly of first generation Filipinos, Kababayang Pilipino is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Filipino folk heritage through its presentation of dance and music. This vibrant group provides the opportunity for its members to educate themselves and in turn, educate the community at large about the rich history and culture of the Filipino. Conceived for youth, by youth, Kababayang Pilipino is ever inspired by each new generation of young people who are eager to discover something of themselves by learning something of the Filipino people to which they are tied in culture, bound in hearth and indelibly marked in spirit. "Balik Tanaw" will also feature performances by KP’s Children Workshop, composed of young artists aged four and up.
